Customs & Costs

Clearance: Customs duty and a one-time environmental fee for future recycling must be paid.
Registration: Vehicle registration is done at municipalities (e.g., TUC in South Tarawa).
Biosecurity and Export Certificate: When purchasing a vehicle for island regions, request the Original Export Certificate and a Fumigation/Disinfection Certificate (JEVIC/EWI). Customs strictly inspects vehicles for hidden rust, radiation, and biological contamination (seeds, insects).

Age & Import Restrictions (CRITICAL)

Limits are variable, but it is recommended to import cars no older than 8–10 years. Due to the climate (salt and humidity), importing older cars is highly inadvisable.
