Shipping & Logistics

Steering: Right-hand drive is the standard (Malawi drives on the left). If you plan to register a left-hand drive vehicle, confirm with your clearing agent first.
Ports: Landlocked: usually via Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), then by road to Lilongwe, Blantyre or Mzuzu (Songwe/Kasumulu border); also via Beira or Nacala (Mozambique) or Durban (South Africa).
Inspection: No pre-shipment inspection in Japan is required; the Malawi Bureau of Standards checks the vehicle on arrival.

Customs & Costs

Clearance: Customs clearance through MRA (Malawi Revenue Authority).
Documents: A Motor Vehicle Importer Certificate from the Ministry of Transport (valid 12 months) and an MRA TIN are needed before clearance.
Registration: Fitness check at PVHO, issuance of license plates and vehicle passport (Road Worthy).

Age & Import Restrictions (CRITICAL)

Age Limit: There is no formal ban (a 2023 proposal to ban cars over 10 years was not adopted). Duties are calculated based on customs value (CIF) and year of manufacture - old cars are taxed at a higher rate.
